I got this at a local thrift store (along with a pretty Erte poster) yesterday. I can't make out the signature but for some reason I thought the painting/style looked familiar, so I bought it for $20.
Can anyone tell the name? All I think I see is '35 or '55?
    Thank you!

I can't really see the border very well, but it looks as though there is Hebrew writing around the outsides.

Is there perhaps more to the picture behind the frame?

    Hi,
To me it looks like King Henry the VIII. Does it look like a playing card perhaps the King of Spades?

I thought that too at first, but the beard is all wrong to be Herny VIII.

The siggie I can see in the top left green patch seems to say Stein as a surname?

Hmmm, how about a close up of the signature area at the top-left.

I do think it is probably a Jewish man. The Hebrew letters may be spelling out Shalom, but they are up and down so I am not really sure. In terms of the signature and the date, you guys seem to have much better eyesight than me (at least on this piece:rolleyes:)

Also, I just noticed this...doesn't his body seem to be totally disproportionate to his head if the greenish color is the background?

1955, I'd think. Does appear to be a man wearing a shtreimel. And those are Hebrew letters on the sides; perhaps someone can make out what they say.

Copy of a Marc Chagall painting ? Sure reminds me of Chagall, definitely Jewish I think

I think the man may be Hasidic but from an older time...maybe farther to the east? Most Shtreimel are much wider brimmed.
