This is the 2nd painting I found at a local thrift store today. I googled Negret artist - and Edgar Negret, a sculpture, came up all over the place.

It also said he was known mostly for his geometrical sculptures - and I thought if he did paint this could be by him. - Is it?

Thank you - I appreciate any help!

Painting is not by him. Totally different style and not same signature.

It's probably an unknown artist with the same last name

    @rink28 is almost certainly right.

But I wouldn't rush to judgment without additional research. Signature on bottom of several sculptures below. I don't think it's the same hand as yours, but the changes from 1966 - 1988 are significant.

I don't think it is by Edgar Negret. It is after the style of Osvaldo Guayasamín, an Ecuadorian artist. I'd probably be looking for an Ecuadorian artist named Negret. I have a similar painting done my Marco Umaquiza - another Ecuadorian.

Would this be abstract or surreal?
It actually looks like a painting by a Cuban artist I had posted here last year (I can't remember his name & it's long since sold)

It looks like it might be a very modern Madonna image. There was a tattoo artist named Freddy Negrete, a darned good one, but this isn't anything close to his style either.

Take a look at the paintings of Osvaldo Guayasamín as i mentioned above - there's no denying that whoever painted yours was at least heavily inspired by him (This could even be a direct copy of one of his works).

    Google images search results:

    EDIT:

Take a look here...9th image down on this page - yours seems to be a copy:

EDIT again - here's the one that I think it's a copy of:

I thought you nailed it with your first reply, but now you really really left little room for doubt about what this is.

Well, I was 2 for 2 picking copies today - at least they were by known artists!
    Thank you for your help

Looking at the two you can see how much is lost when someone copies a work without knowing and expressing the feeling that went into creating the original.
    What a difference.
The first one is not a bad painting, but it is soulless. The one Aaron posted has great depth of feeling and expression.

Would I describe it as a surreal Madonna or a abstract?

Neither. It's not surreal because it doesn't deal with the unconscious mind. It's not abstract because the subjects can be identified. Guayasamín's work has been described as social realism or primitivism. Perhaps one of those terms will work for you.
