    Hi folks

something i found in a charity shop last week for a pound each

trying to workout what they were used for, looks like they have been used as ash trays at some time

they both make a ting at different pitches when struck, don't know if that is coincidental or intentional

    any age to them?

    decorated with birds

    any thoughts or info appreciated

They are lids for Javanese sirih or betel boxes/lime boxes.
Go back and see if you can find the boxes, they look like footed bowls.

This is a photo I have on file of my complete sirih/betel set, with one of the round lidded boxes in front and the other on the left.
I hope you get an idea:

thanks Aj, will have look tomorrow as they might just have been separated (probably would have picked them up as well though if i had seen them)

that explains why the birds are upside down ;)

actually the figural one would be upside down that way round, so thinking they might had gone together at one time, they don't seem to fit but looks pretty close

am i just making this marriage, i wouldn't put it past me :playful:. does seem to fit with the arrangements of the figure and bird though ?

think i've had a similar type one before from india where it was 2 pieces that no longer fitted together

I see the figure now, didn't know it was there. It isn't Javanese, their figures look like Wayang puppets. So probably Indian.
Even if Indian, they could still be from two different items.

my fault Aj, thought i had shown the figure in the first pics

yeah could be, but the style /patina seems pretty consistant with both even if decoration slightly different, and size is bang on
