Stylized fish hook, typical south pacific souvenir.
Likely from Hawaii, large purveyor of such..

Maori style carving impossible to know who carved it and the material, the Chinese have carved thousands of them in a number of materials.

It's a beautiful form and color.

Could be Canadian jade and made in China. Just saying...

It is beautiful, charlie, and yes, jade. A Hei-Manaia/Hei-Matau. Hei means hanging or pendant, matau a fish hook, manaia is a messenger between worlds and a guardian spirit.
Manaias come in different shapes, mine (below) has a body that resembles a Hei-Tiki.
It certainly could, with these modern Maori jades you can only know for sure if you bought it from a reputable seller. Even NZ sellers sell Chinese made 'Maori jades'.:arghh: Maybe the size of your jade speaks for a Maori maker?:nailbiting:

Speaking from NZ it's definitely Pounamu (NZ greenstone) and some pendants are HUGE. These are sold in huge numbers in the various tourist destinations in New Zealand, but that makes them no less genuine and beautiful.

    Thanks Dory

That's very helpful and good to know

I suppose they range in quality as well

Are they relatively expensive things to purchase or very affordable ?

Absolutely - there are the Chinese jade ones that someone mentioned but I think they are still carved here. They do range in price and the range in colour/density of the jade is tremendous. So price depends on the quality of the jade and the carving, and presumably if antique that would add something. I have no idea how to tell if one was hundreds of years old or made yesterday though, sorry. When I get some time I'll try and do some research for you.
