It could use a bit of wire-brushing to see if it is complete, or possibly has a maker's mark, but resembles a 'saw set' or saw-setting tool.

These were used to adjust the side-to-side pitch of saw teeth, and came in a myriad of types.

I thought it looked more like a pot lifter than a saw set

I'd go for that as well. It's just too dirty to tell.

Pretty sure it's one of hundreds of types of early 1900-1930 auto valve spring compression tool, looks like many I have accumulated for the Model T.

Hello, I agree, definitely not a saw set!! I can't seem to get my head around that being a spring compression tool, how it would it be used to compress a spring??? Regards, Lou

Hello, Try a Google search for "Vintage Jamco Steel Hot Pan Lifter", looks like the same mechanism that you have. Regards, Lou
