Topeng dance mask, Krishna?

I found this over a year ago and did some research on it. I'm finding ritual dance Topeng masks. It's a little confusing to me, sorry. I know that in Indonesia they hold festivals and there are plays that they do that are ritualistic. They use mask to depetic a character they are performing. I've looked and haven't found one like mine. Someone said it resembles a figure of royalty, that only "God" figures had a green face. All I know is, this piece seems very old and very authentic. It appears to have multiple layers of paint on it. The back, you can see has been hand carved, very roughly at that too. I noticed that appears that someone wore this alot because I see what appears the outline of a face and then you see the dark discoloration. I found this piece really cool.

 

having worked with dance masks for the past 24 years I can tell you you;re only seeing a change in the actual wood color from the finish , not sweat and oils from it being worn.

 

How old do you believe it is? With the way it's carved, it appears to be done by hand, not manufactured made.

 

Have you seen a mask like this before?

 

It's carved by hand but I doubt it's very old.

I should of been a little more detailed, I don't know if your answer was for the mask I have or just for these kind of masks overall. So you've seen a mask just like the one I have?

 

To the best of my knowledge you have an Indonesian carved tourist mask based on Topeng human dance masks .
This is what the real ones should look like.


If I had one of these , I'd jump up and down....yours...not so much.

You can still see the bite plate under the mouth opening....!!!

 

Thanks for the pic. I've read that that had that bite plate a couple of days ago. That's cool. I'll still have it hanging for decoration use.
