    Hello,
Ive posted one of these pieces in the silver forum, but Id love some insights on the rest. I hope this is the right forum in which to do so. :)
I recently bought a box of (what I thought was) faux tortoise shell objects in a goodwill store. Upon closer inspection and with some testing, I discovered it is all genuine.
Alas, I dont know much about tortoiseshell, so am wondering if anyone here can shed any insights with regard to certain objects, ages, values etc. (Im not looking at selling just now, but would like a ballpark).
Thank you for any help you can offer.

ABOVE: Am wondering if this is perhaps a busk for a corset? Originally thought bookmark or page turner, but unsure.

Last pair - again, not entirely sure what this is - possibly a belt (broken link). If it is, the size is *tiny*.

Check the Fish and Wildlife laws, like elephant ivory there are provable dates for the sale of sea turtle shell, among other regulations. Maybe that's the reason there was a box full at the goodwill.

Yes I know a little about this and Australian law, not looking to sell.

That is so interesting and challenging too. Looks like a collection but one in which the objects aren't necessarily of the same period. One would have to assume that the combs are pre-1920s which was women began to bob their hair. Yet they're very modern in design. And the purse frame appears to be 1910s or 1920s.

Weren't Tortoise shell combs still available in Hawaii, during the 1970s?
I seem to remember looking at them, but they were rather pricey.

Thank you Debora, yes they do appear from different ages / regions. The cloak clasp is a favourite as it has a silver hallmarked clasp which looks Victorian to me.

The reverse swastika pendant and a few of the combs look a bit more Oceania / Pacific to my eyes, but I might be wrong.

I'm guessing. Doing a lot of that lately:shame:

    I think the purse is 1940s - 50s.

Tortoise jewelry was made in the Caribbean well into the 1990s. It's not legal to sell in the US any more as far as I know, or at least not without so many restrictions even the big auction houses don't want to mess with it.

I'm aware of these restrictions. But I don't know what I have here, valuable or otherwise. As Ive asserted above, Im not looking to sell. :)

The clasp has a British part hallmark, Victorian.

With the Victoria head and that shape O, it should be 1869.
