I left a bid at a estate sale or a massive etching. The etching is from 1851 and set behind a antique frame with the wavy and bubble glass. I would be devastated if the glass broke..

Is glass from this era very delicate?
Is it better to transport laying down or standing up?
    Tape across the glass?

    Hi,
I have always found it is better to transport standing up. I always put Styrofoam on the bottom to help with vibrations from bumps.

I agree with Greg about standing up.
You don't say how big it is.
You don't say if it's you transporting but I assume.
Tape glass yes as yes it is delicate and it may have been cut roughly and even have small edge cracks or hidden areas prone to crack if abused.
You must restrain the frame so it doesn't bounce apart on the road from it's own weight of glass and all.
Don't forget that there are clownfarts out there driving who, only because they were breathing and had money, were given a license to 'drive'. :p
You may have to duck and avoid them. :(
Wrap the edges in Styrofoam, or heavy towels/blankets, and loosely bind it with straps not rope. You want wide flat areas to spread support not small round ones.
Bungies could work too but hard to adjust for applied pressure and they aren't flat.
If it's large then 2 straps per the two directions.

Note it's always better to do too much than to wish you did later. :)

When you say transport, are you just driving is somewhere yourself or is someone else moving it for you? Or are you talking about mailing?

Oh gosh, I didnt take measurements.
When I saw it in the picture I was expecting something more standard, when I saw it in person I was definitely taken back by its size.
My arm span is about 5'4" and I dont think I could carry it length wise.

    The frame is Eastlake.

Itll have to go through 2 people before getting to me.
The man that is running the estate sale and my boss who will then hand it over to me. :cyclops:

I know my boss will at least wrap it in a blanket.
Ill be out of town this weekend which is why I wont be able to transport it.

Of all the things that are hard to ship safely, large glazed prints and watercolours rank near the top of the list. Mirrors are equally awkward.

We don't even try to sell large glazed prints online, if we do get these as part of a lot then we will remove the print from the frame, discard the glass and sell it that way. If the frame is any good that would also be sold separately.

How is it traveling? If it's just being passed from hand to hand, no particular packing is required (a blanket would be sufficient); just keep it upright and pay attention.

    Keeping it upright is key.

Not exactly the same, but see the painting John Frederick Herring (Senior) 1795 – 1865 British Barn Interior with Two Horses, a Goat and Chickens. Dated 1852

I've never been confronted with moving something like this. Thank you for the education about moving these large pieces safely.

That looks to be the same one, just looked colored and cropped.

Whats the difference in a mezzotint vs an etching, and how do you tell?
