    Hello -

These two vintage Nautical fellows were obtained together. They measure approx. 5'' tall.

I believe they are made of resin. In the past, when I've found like pieces from the same time frame, they have been associated with some type of old comic strip from the 30's or 40's. Sometimes I can figure them out, but not always. Not today if these are. They may be just be two fellers' living the salty sea life.

    Thanks for your help!

Looks like New England seacoast tourist pieces.

Seconded. Gloucester Massachusetts, best guess. I run across a ton of similar items in Connecticut.

Yup. New England. The sea captain and the fisherman... Purely decorative, but quite popular in beach towns back when I was a kid (1960's.) My Mom had a few, but they were carved from wood.

As Evelyb said, think Gloucester, MA:

    and Gorton's fish sticks!

Do you think they (the two of them) were done by the same carver? The happy captain and the worried fisherman.

What a difference in facial structure between the two (especially in the noses and chubby cheeks on one and the lean/sharp cheekbone structure on the other).

The "Captain" almost looks "cartoon-ish" compared to the "fisherman." ;)

We sold those in the Cape Tradewinds gift shop back in the 80s. Typical beach side souvenirs.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate all the info and I learned a lot I didn't know. This time my 'take a chance' was a big fat 'phooey!'.

In the flea market box they go. Have 5 boxes so far for one of the local flea markets here. This one is indoors in this hot Texas heat, can't pass that up! I'm skeptical it will be a success in this area, but we will see. Going to try it next month.

All this talk of fishermen and New England. I want some chowder and fish and chips!

If you want chowder, don't be fooled by that Manhattan vegetable soup that they call chowder. Clams, broth, some green onions, potatoes and cream. Season with a little salt & pepper. NO TOMATOES AND NO CELERY!! So there.

If that's not available, skip the cream. Rhode Island clam chowder is acceptable too, and that broth is clear. Some Rhodies must have been lactose intolerant or something, poor dears. Tomatoes and celery make clam SOUP, not chowder. Corn chowder is another animal altogether, and it may contain clams or other seafood, but don't confuse it with clam chowder.

My mother made oyster stew and it was in a clear broth. I can't eat that stuff they serve in most restaurants where they use flour to thicken it. Yuck. The starch in the potatoes is all you need.

Flour in soup is just wrong. Cream in soup is not a problem.
