Unknown Chinese Bowl!

Discussion in 'Antique Discussion' started by Matthew Bunting, May 5, 2016.

  1. Hi,

I have this lidded Chinese bowl that I brought recently and am struggling to find information on.

I'm unsure what exactly it is but I've been told it's 19th century. It certainly looks very interesting

If anyone knows anything about it i'd really appreciate it

    Thanks
    Matt

Is it made from Cinnabar or it is wood? So beautiful!

Could be both. Cinnabar is a lacquer, so it could be on a wooden base.

I think it's cinnabar lacquer and it looks to me like it might be old, but that doesn't mean much. I think lacquer is usually applied over wood. It does look very nice and sometimes clear lacquers were used that allowed the wood grain to show. Can't tell the source but an idle guess would be that Japan or Korea rather than China.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

It is beautiful -- I have no information to help, though.
