WOW! No clue but that is pretty cool!
Loos like it was to be wall mounted or some such.
First reaction was for a car hood ornament but doubt that now.

Interesting, but "how" would it be mounted to something? If this has any heft to it, wouldn't it need screw holes in the flange to stay attached?

Matthew, what's that small round piece emerging from the underside? How much does it weigh? Does it appear to be solid or hollow?

Whatever is protruding may have been longer to attach to some other part though it would've be better doing so in a higher position. This also could've slid into a U shaped receiver.

  5. The small round piece appears to have been broken off at some point, other than that i can't say what it is. It is defiantly solid though, weighs over half a kilo

At 1 pound, I'm not so surprised about the lack of screw holes. Has the look of some kind of "hook" - as in for coats, etc. It would certainly work for that.

Or perhaps just a decorative, non-functional element from a piece of furniture? Although it's a bit dirty looking, doesn't look like it was outside, does it?

This is a copy of an applique originally attached to a Greek bronze cauldron of the 7th century BC. It is meant to be a griffin.

Or let's say I assume it is a copy, I only looked at the photo on my mobile phone. But it is very unlikely that this is an original...

Also I would expect an original to be hollow, not solid...
