    I think she is holding firewood. Looking at her dress she could be French.

    I believe you're right regarding the firewood rather than straw, I've changed the title.

    You could well also be right about it being French, I was thinking similar.

    She needs a good wash.
    Warm sudsy water, not hot. Soft toothbrush for the crevices.
    She will look so much better, particularly if you are going to sell her.
