I bought this old gas lamp about 20 years ago and have always puzzled who designed it.
It has a beautiful arts and crafts copper design with stylised swans attaching it to the magazine holder base .
The glass panels are beautiful etched and remind me of the Glasgow School of art designs. There is a Canadian Patent number on the panels No 25591 which was for a Francis Wenham Gas lamp dating to 1886.
The lamp was converted later to have electricity.
It’s my favourite thing in the house ( don’t tell my husband I said that ) !!
I didn’t know which forum to put this in as it is metalwork , glass and furniture.
Hoping someone can tell me more about it Thank you

Stunning-has elements of Rene Macintosh in it.
PS-Was it absolutely designed by Macintosh, that we may soon find out by one of extremely motivated ace sleuths.

The patent information isn't terribly helpful as it's about the mechanism and not the design.

Very nice and possibly important. Glasgow School for sure. Appears to be a newell post lamp. I would have someone well versed in Scottish/UK arts and crafts take a look. Being in the US, I would not know who that would be.

Beautiful lamp. My brother and SIL have some Mackintosh reproduction pieces, and I know they would love to add this genuine piece to their collection.

Those floral motifs were usually designed by Charles' wife Margaret and her sister Frances Macdonald and incorporated in Mackintosh furniture etc.

The Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society in Glasgow can probably help you:

    Their contact page:

    As an aside:
Many people are confused by the name Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Rennie was his middle name, after his mother's maiden name. So when speaking of him it is either the full Charles Rennie Mackintosh, or just Mackintosh.

If it doesn't turn out to be by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, you could always call it a Charles Tummy Mackintosh lamp.:angelic:

That is so lovely -- definitely the CR Macintosh style, and the hammered copper is very arts and crafts. I confess to being a tad envious!
