This mirror just came in and I am trying to figure out who the maker is. The back is marked SK and 900 (shown in 3rd picture). It looks like it should be hung in a position where the back is visible - the back is decorated with a floral design in deep relief. The mirror is only (roughly) 11 inches by 8 inches, but weighs 2 pounds 12 ounces. It is about 1/2 inch thick at the edge, not counting the added depth of the back. Any ideas? Thanks ... Dave

Impressive piece. I'm wondering where it would be hung so people could see the back.

It's a fairly recent Turkish wedding mirror...

It looks like 'Djokja' or Yogyakarta silver, colonial silver from central Java, Indonesia. I sold a bracelet with a similar design a while ago.
There was a well-known workshop called Sukristo, which used the mark SK, along with the silver grade. Sorry, the site is in Dutch, but if you scroll down the page you find SK:

Here are some of the Djokja designs:

The mirror would have been made between the 1930's-'50's, in the old royal city of Kota Gede in central Java. The jewelry and silverware of Kota Gede were sold in the nearby city of Yogyakarta, hence the name Djokja/Yogyakarta silver.
I have some Djokja pieces for sale at the moment, but I've never seen a mirror. It is worth quite a lot in a specialist sale.

Thanks all - great information! Wanted to answer yesterday, but we were working in the dark. An underground electric cable failed shortly after noon, and we didn't get our power back on until after 6 pm. :bear:

This item is not Yogya silver, it is a Turkish wedding mirror, while they can be found with old Ottoman Empire marks, this one is 20th century (though they were still in production a few years ago, guessing they probably still are), it is not particularly uncommon...

Thank you Cheryl - people that have looked at it here didn't think it was a very old piece. One thing that is unusual is the size - many of the comparables are half the size of this one, or even smaller. I'm guessing the silver content is something like 20 percent of the weight, but don't have a good way to evaluate that.

    i.e. vintage, not antique.

I think the mirror would weigh heavy, so 20 to 30 percent would be a dcent guesstimate.

Cheryl, I've seen a lot of Turkish filigree silver jewellery with that eight petal motif. Ties in rather nicely stylistically. I remember seeing similar mirrors in Istanbul.
