Unusual Old (???) Dish

Hello !

Can anyone shed any light on this blue & white heavily potted dish / bowl ?

I first thought that it might be from SE Asia and have some age to it, although after looking at the base, it could perhaps be a studio piece or even a modern copy made for the tourist trade. I find the varying designs of the concentric swirls quite interesting, and could perhaps even give a clue as to it's origin.

I really cannot speak to the age of it, but I would GUESS that it looks like student pottery and decoration. Also looks to have been used in the art studio around paints that have permeated the surface.

 

Is the shape of the bowl sort of tilted, or is that an illusion caused by the photography?

 

Looks like modern African dyed soapstone.

 

GOOD question @clutteredcloset49 ....I'm guessing the actual shape is intentionally "distorted"......wrong word....higher at one end than the other.....or tapered around to lower???? That's MY thought... interesting pattern in it tho!!

Peter is it quite heavy? It looks rather like African soapstone to me too. Try looking at Kisii soapstone.
