I just recently purchased this ornately carved piece. I think it's walnut and dates to somewhere around the mid 1800's. There are four slightly sinister laughing faces. I have no idea what it was used as. Could someone please help me with any information you may have. imagejpeg_0~2.jpg imagejpeg_0~2.jpg

I'll take some more pics of it tonight and post them. It's somewhat heavy so I need to have a friend come over and help me lift it off the wall.

I bought it in Windsor Maine. It measures 50 in high and almost 53 in wide. There are two diagonally drilled holes at the bottom which tells me that it was mounted to something or something was mounted to the bottom of it. Thanks for your response I'll put post more pictures very soon

    To me too.
The photo is very dark and has reflections of a white and a yellow light source. I tried to make the details stand out a bit more, but I am no master tweaker. More pictures would be nice.

I think either an architectural piece such as over a mantel or a back for a buffet or server of some type. Usually, the latter would have more dimensionality than this so would be a bit odd. Mantel pieces often have mirrors in them but not necessarily so. I think higher-end American. Here is an example of an even higher-end mantel without mirror.

Photo wouldn't post so here is a link:
