Featured Very unusual primitive book stand - guessing on age

I posted this on Gila's thread by mistake, sorry for any confusion!

Primitive, not very stable book stand. Only the top part folds. It's not really stable enough to put a large dictionary or bible on...... odd.

Maybe it shipped flat from a catalog, and the customer assembled it? The top expands/stretches up to 20 inches, easily.

As I sit here, it works really well for a smaller book - you can put it quite close, and it's also very easy to move aside. Super portable. :)

    It looks pretty old.

I wouldn't call this "primitive," Scout. 3 or 4 decades old at the most, probably closer to 2. It is pretty cool though!

The uniformity of the curlicues and cast sprocket would indicate it was manufactured in some quantity, not a home project - over designed for a make-doer.

But I can't imagine it being designed (this oddly) for any contemporary use, either.

So I'd be really curious to see something similar you are comparing it to?

Comments welcome - I'm just having fun with it :)

I really think it is 20s and would not call it primitive. More art deco IMHO. Can't imagine anyone going to the trouble to produce this in this manner post-war.

GOD BLESS YOU!!! anundverkaufen + verybrad <3

I could tell it was machine made, but also too janky to be made anywhere near contemporary. It seems it was high-concept at the time. The first illustration above ^^^^^ is closest to the one I have - it doesn't have the spring/brace in the center that would hold it more rigidly or the side holders like the second image below. It does spread out to accommodate a larger book, but isn't easy to open and close. Cute.

    Thanks again, guys.......

Kasperscuriosities Two hundred years too late.

I am taken back by the fact that other than reading sheet music one would need a stand for a book and a dictionary no less. Hmmm? Crazy. What's wrong with a table or oh I don't know... holding it. LOL. Very interesting. What is the second picture Scout? I think I have one. The thing you called a remote.

I'd been meaning to start a thread for it and ask myself, Kaspers!

I thinking it might be a tool used in threading and twisting wire, but really have no clue. I've seen coiled handles like that on forging tools and cast iron kitchen skillets used to put some distance between a hand an a hot element.

In his copy, Noyes takes every opportunity to point out how much more accessible a stand would make a heavy dictionary in comparison to a shelf. It is convenient if you use one every day and don't have to put it back everyday, and does work for high and low desks, just like those in the picture.

The main point (he hammered in) was how much more often everyone would use one - the a dawning of the "Age of Portability" we're now drowning in!

    :) happy Friday!
