Hello everyone - I found this on eBay and for $.01 so I thought I'd take a chance. It's a trinket box standing about 3 1/2" to the top of the finial and about 4" wide. I thought I recognized the mark as Volkstedt but now that I've got it I'm not so sure. It is handpainted. There is damage to the inside lid rim but the main thing troubling me is the base. It is unglazed except for a little circle where the mark is placed. Is anyone familiar enough with Volkstedt to tell me whether this is a repro? Below is the best shot of the mark I could get - the original is blurry and if I try and get any closer for a shot I lose it completely. Thanks much!

I think you're safe in saying Volkstedt. The number certainly looks European and old-timey. The only piece of Volkstedt that I have has the same mark in under-glaze blue (though crisper), and the glaze on the bottom has a similar patchy (parcel?) appearance. I don't think the factory was sufficiently prestigious to warrant European imitators, but that's just an opinion.

    I can't help, Don, but wanted to say I think it's charming. I love hand-painted pieces. :)

Thank you moreotherstuff and Pat - I've since examined it further and found the finial has been reattached. Still what can you expect for $.01? I still like it, though, so I'll put in on the shelf with my other boxes. Will probably not deal with that seller again though.
