Featured Wacky glass vase with moriage style decorated alligator handles

Decided to call them alligators due to the round snout but the could
be anything. The vase itself is a hand painted floral thing with
a lava(?) spout. There was a pair of these but the other has a massive
crack from the bottom and spiralling up almost to the top lip so I don't
think I'll be selling them as a pair somehow. Not much wear on the base
so probably made yesterday. In fact I'm thinking a glass artist took
a common painted vase and added the decoration.
What do you think??

Wacky is the word for it. I agree, the hand painted floral bits, although well done, don't fit the handles style at all. I suspect they were added later. It's all a bit over the top. The handles look like lizards or geckos or some such climbing up the glass. Someone had some fun with these. Not so old art glass but probably a one off. What a pity the other one is cracked.

 

I can't agree. It's not a modern piece, with the ground & polished pontil. The flower and leaves is really high quality work. The lizards, what ever species they are, are also quality work. Both the animals and the enamel decoration were done by professionals, not someone playing in a studio. I'm going to speculate...Bohemia, 1890 - 1910.

 

Wild-eyed guess but . . . I think they are (representations of) salamanders, not alligators.

 

Can't see the handles being added later. The necessary heat would surely have destroyed the florals. Salamanders sounds good to me, or some common garden lizard.

 

I purely do wish that one was mine, It may well be from Moser.

 

You have a piece of Expensive Moser Glass.

I was leaning towards Bohemian (Harrach actually) These drop edge pieces are not easy to pinpoint.

IIRC Cherryhill had posted a piece or two of drip edge and a buddy of mine has some with the drip edge that he can't identify.

I can cross post this to the Ebay Glass board and see if anybody can nail it down.

 

And I really like this piece.

 

Oh yeah
Just woke up to an early Christmas present. The auction house listed them as dragon handled vases and the damage put everyone off except me. Ended up getting them for AU$23.30 including commission. Think I'll wait for Desperate Fun to report back from the eBay glassies before even attempting to put a price on them. Price? Heck I'm not even going to think about it yet.

I think Harrach too, the paint on the lizard looks the same as the one in the link I posted

 

Nice Christmas present! When I saw the first photograph, I thought those were slugs.

The piece with the crack can be repaired. There is a film that the restorers use and it is almost invisible. Here are links to websites that do repairs. You can probably find one in your country, I'm just using these so you can see examples.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this. I was hoping to get more eyes on your piece. No definitive attribution but Harrach seems to be the front runner. (I guess Harrach was fond of the Salamanders with wacky colouring)

 

Thanks for the effort DF. Think I will have to list them as Harrack/Moser with the emphasis on Harrack and as for price probably low to mid three figures with emphasis on the "mid".
