It has a chain that pulls out. Thats the only thing I can think of is a watch fob. Any idea of timeline and maker? fob.jpg fobpin.jpg fobback.jpg

It's a spring loaded lapel pin, usually has a mechanical pencil attached.
I believe they have also been used by nurses, with a cased thermometer attached.
Keeps a frequently used item from being misplaced.

Modern versions are used for employee badges, especially ones with the magnetic strips, QR codes, etc.

It seems Ketcham McDougall was the manufacturer of your item and I think the time frame for yours would be early 1900's.
I called it a spring-loaded lapel pin, but you may have more luck searching for retractable pin.
These pins were also used to keep spectacles and lapel watches handy.
The pin assembly on the back of yours covers the date, from what I can see, it seems to read Feb......03? and Apr.....10?

I'm betting the spring is still good; that could go right back to work.

Thank you Sandra , from your description , I was able to find a few on ebay. One person had the part blocking the date off and theirs showed feb 24 03.

Yes the chain comes out and retracts perfectly ;)

Definitely to hold pince nez (pinch nose) spectacles! The chain is light enough to wear securely your glasses (they have a tendancy to fall of your nose when you laugh or grin! :clown::hilarious:)
