I can't identify the artist by the signature "E S". Is this by a known artist, or by a talented amateur? P1160999.JPG P1170015.JPG

I think maybe an illustrator more than fine artist?

Reminds me of the turn of the century work by Maud Stumm who did book/magazine/calendar illustrations.

But I do think yours is later.

I agree, it looks more like an illustration.

I also thought, illustration. Try a reverse image search on Google and see if it was ever published.

I did a Google image search, and didn't find anything. How do I do a reverse image search?

    1. Right click the image > COPY IMAGE LOCATION (aka URL... or something similar)
    2. Go here: https://images.google.com/
    3. Click the camera
    4. Paste URL
    5. Click "search by image"
Alternatively, you can go to the same url and upload the image from your computer.

Ok, that's how I did my initial image search. I didn't realize that was a "reverse" image search. No luck.
    Thanks, though.

Well done! I wonder if the watercolor could be a student study.

Original is earlier than I thought.

The darker area below ES, was that under a frame?

Actually, it looks like it was folded. I'm not sure this has ever been in a frame.

I had wondered if it was by a known artist, or a talented amateur. In light of the search results, I'm inclined to say a talented amateur, possibly/probably a student. I'll need to look in the family record and see if there is anyone with those initials.

Can you post a close-up of the paper from the back without the paint? The paper may give a hint to the age.

Some artists will do a study in water color first before working in oil, however, the initials at the bottom, squashed that theory.

Yes, I'd be happy to do a close-up of the back, but it maybe tomorrow before I'm able to.

I looked up Emma Calve, and it turns out she was an opera singer. This may explain why my grandmother (also an opera singer) had it, but not where it originated.
