Hi, Folks- Pictured are 2 etchings I bought at auction years ago. Wenceslaus Hollar, prolific 17th C. Bohemian artist, is the etcher. Titles are "The File and Viper" and "The Rebellion of the Hands & Feet". Frame size is 12-1/2" by 9-1/4". Can someone tell me anything about them without my having to remove them from their frames? Are there different states of these etchings? Can one tell which as they are now? If I remove them from the frames what will I need to know to determine their age? And of course anything about the deliciously grotesque symbolism would be helpful. They appear to be old and perhaps have some value. Thanks for exercising your brains about this. I am in your debt.
I love Surrealism ! Those are wild. To me,it looks like they have been acid burned a little. That could be the backing on them. Or the mats . Id open them up and see whats what. It doesnt hurt the value and often you find info.
Not an expert, but I suspect the fact that the titles are in English suggests that, at best, they are restrikes.
