    Hi,
I have this carved face, signed Trevor H and called Raven Man - 12" x 5 1/2"D x 6 1/2". Maybe the eyes are abalone but with the red lines I don't know, horse hair for the hair.
I've been searching Trevor H and keep coming up with Trevor Hunt but this piece isn't by him.
    Any information appreciated.
    Thanks for looking

    That's a rather odd mask,
It looks like it was done by someone who almost knows what they are doing....but not quite.
The hair out the hole in the head, the varnish finish are older methods....but the overall design is non traditional, even for a beginner.
And the marker siggy to the base....and staples.....tell me it's done by a non native artist....as more of a homage to a NWC mask.

That's the best I can come up with, as I've not seen it's like before.

Thanks komokwa:) Actually it is a little creepy to me. Are the eyes abalone?
about the staples, I should have included that information. the guy that had it put the shoelace through the hair and stapled it to the back, he said there was nothing to hold the hair in place when he bought it. He then added the white lace so he could hang it on the wall, apparently when he tried hanging it with the black lace the staples kept coming out and the mask would drop to the floor.

Well then....the flat bottom.....with no side holes for a leather or wire rope to hang it...meaning it sits on it's base ......more non naive details..!

The eyes look like abalone...but not from a choice part of the shell.

thanks again komokwa! I haven't seen an abalone shell for many years but I wasn't sure with the red part. As a kid I remember eating abalone and every house had shells outside for ashtrays.
Great information that you share about the flat bottom and no holes:)

It's not 100% accurate , cuz you can find some 50's ..60's tourist carvings that sit flat....but they are either V shaped or nor hollowed out in the back....though...
the carving is correct for the period....cuz they were made that way......
    this one....not so much !

the Oscar / Ozzie Matilpi masks....can also sit upright.....but they are ...
    2 legit 2 quit !!!

A very intriguing mask, cx. It clearly has NW Coast features, but it looks like the carver has also studied Iroquois False Face masks. And the ears almost look East Asian.

I agree with what Komo has said; perhaps adding that the wood does appear to be red cedar as far as I can tell. That just means the carver was likely in the US or Canada, doesn't imply they are native.
