What are these celluloid(?) things?

They came in a box of bone crochet needles and bodkins or awls. My first thought was thimbles. But they're smooth and too thin.

If they weren't nicely painted I wouldn't bother with them but they must have been something fairly important to be decorated.

They're about an inch tall and the hole on the side makes me think they were tied to something.

All help and ideas are appreciated.

They're celluloid or another early plastic.

Ah-if only the Ancestors would just keep the original box ! But then where would we find our mysteries to stimulate our 'little grey cells' ?

The one on the right looks used as a thimble with small dots of damage from needles. I used a plastic thimble to mend a hem with a travel sewing kit the other day and it left similar dots in the tip of the plastic..
