I have a set of six silver teaspoons, with a hook in the centre of the handle, as if they should hang on the flared edge of something, and a finnial on the end (pointed). They are markd FH in a circle, crown, lion and C. Do you know what they are please?

    Welcome Anne.
    The letters denote
    Francis Howard, Sheffield, Sterling Silver
Second half of the 20th Century

The hooks are probably to stop the spoons slipping into whatever they are used to spoon up, maybe jam etc.

Spoon people will be along to give you better information.

Thank you. I was told they were reproduction coronation annointing spoon, but I'm not so sure there would be a set of 6.

Reproduction of an ancient Roman spoon, most likely a 'Corinium Christening Spoon'...

Copy of the Corinium spoon, but can't think why you'd need a set of 6 unless they can also be used. Still think they would work as honey spoons if they can be balanced on the rim of a teacup. With spoon bowl facing cup wall, should work.

Your link shows a spoon for serving honey (have one similar in pewter somewhere around here), the spoon bowl would have the lip facing down into whatever it rests on rather than upside down and the honey drips in.

There were/are a lot of ancient Roman spoons found in the UK, this is just a set of novelty coffee or tea spoons (depending on the size) based on one of them, and there are different theories on the reason for the cochlearium form, but they were undoubtedly used for eating...

Many thanks to all of you for your replies. Also, the help with the date, as they didn't appear to be very old. Must try honey with my tea now, and see how it goes :)

I shudder at the thought of honey in tea.
