One seems to be holding a torch (??) and the other a stick (??). Either that or a wine goblet and a barbecued sausage. They seem to be hollow gold flashed spelter mounted on a plinth weighted down with some kind of ground stone. Thought it was resin until I noticed the veins running through it. There is also this weird little sphere on the base with some thread showing through a small hole. Might be something missing and a ball foot of something else was used to fill the hole. As usual no marks anywhere. Is this one of those clever Chinese fakes??? Data 53cm High 10.4Kg Cheers Stephen
Dinoysus/ Bacchus cultic worship, or maybe maenads donning weapons the god converted from his Thyrsus staff?
lol...It looks to me as one is holding a candle torch and the other a candle! The little ball appears to be covering the screw that hold it to the base? besides the one underneath at the bottom.
I see a stone or slate, as miscstuff notes, that once had a felt pad glued to it..... I don't see resin as being heavy enuf to weight it ...
Many resin/powdered stone mixtures have densities (pounds per cubic foot) equal to some types of stone. Many folks are fooled into thinking a resin figurine or sculpture is made of stone due to weight, being cold to the touch, etc. Look more carefully at the porosity on the sides, the present bottom surface was also near the bottom of the mold, so the rising gas bubbles don’t show on the present, machined bottom surface.
I wonder if the ball at the base is for the old "cup and ball" game, where you catch the ball in the cup with the stick on it?
Perhaps they are both ringing hand bells, but girl #2's bell has broken off and is no longer with us?
After a little soapy scrub I found what may possibly be a makers mark. Can anyone pick it??? P.S. The material seems to be brass that has been bronzed and gold Painted?
