    Clay would be my first guess too. They might be some sort of recycled glass too, but odds on clay.

    I start with a loupe and go from there. An old school 10x magnifying glass is a good alternative if you don't have a loupe. Failing that, a good clear image of the beads with a camera, cropped in editing rather than taking it close to the object.
