Among the things my sister-in-law returned to me was this brass framed image. It measures (frame and all) 9.5 inches high, 8 inches open and 6 closed. The image is 5.5 by 3.75 inches.

Sorry, I forgot to clean the cover glass before I photographed it.

The frame looks like brass. The image is made of cloth and other materials attached to a backing, and there is some damage to the cloth in areas. The hands and face are cut from an engraved print (I'm not sure I'm using the correct terminology). I can't tell if the halo appears to be gold, but I'm not sure that it's actually gold leaf.

What is this? It is Russian, or icon1.JPG icon3.JPG icon7.JPG icond.JPG iconb.JPG DSC_1168.JPG where did it come from? How old is it?

What is it called? Is it an "icon"? Is it merely a framed souvenir print? What is this style known as?

By the way, I found an area of damage to the frame that I think my late brother repaired with some sort of glue.

It is a real beauty, Frank, I love it.
A home altar, it portrays Saint Dominic, so it could be Spanish (Santo Domingo in Spanish). Although the Dominican order is represented in just about every Western (influenced) country.

I would call it an altar piece. When I was in Italy, one of the museums told us that priests traveled around the country to places that didn't have a church and set up altars to use temporarily. The priest carried around portable items like this to set up their altars and say Mass. I could be wrong, but that's what it reminds me of. Most of the altar pieces we saw in Italy were made from wood, kind of like Russian icons.

This might also have been displayed in someone's home.

Yes, those are suitable for travel, this one is too fragile, with those delicate flowers and leaves. It was made for a home.

The flowers look like morning glories, if that's any help. Maybe gloxinias. Either would put this squarely in the second half of the Victorian era without any other clues.

I heard some of it, but not the current death toll. It will probably go higher. :(:(:(

I'm just glad my friends down there live far away and don't go to nightclubs.
