This came in a mixed lot I bought in the dark at the end of an outdoor auction. It was filled with stuff and I didn’t think it was anything. After emptying it and seeing it in the light it seems kind of exciting. I don’t want to get excited for nothing though. Is it actually old or just dirty and worn? Thoughts as to where and when? Looks like what I know as sponge painted on the outside which is why I thought it may be pretty old outside of the “patina”. Appears to be lathe turned edit: ahaha. My title auto corrected treen to green. D58471C5-3FD8-4FFC-8EA9-CC828CF2CA4F.jpeg 6698460E-7129-4C2E-AD36-06D892F76520.jpeg 68B4BF98-85F8-4B7F-A41D-393CC0DBEB09.jpeg

So it's actually black, right? Painted or stained? Is only the red color sponged?

If you do it quick, you should be able to click "thread tool" on the top right of your post and change your title

It is black. I believe it’s painted black. The exterior red seems to be the only sponge applied paint. The third brownish tan color inside is also applied to the outside between the red and around base.

Hmm. There’s definitely a circular pattern but it seems fairly simple. Like arches basically.

Does the design in the centre look like a flower?
Or maybe something like this, the Vajrayana Buddhist vishvavajra?

I don’t see the vishvavjra design, but could still be from India do you think AJ?

What is the size of top and bottom ring? You may want to move to Tribal area in case komokwa tapou 2manybooks etc recognize it. BTW, I may have a similar one depending on size, but with different old paint decoration that I’ve long wondered about.

I don't think this lighter version adds much but it does look to me like there is a white shape coming down from the red "teeth"

Nice lightening. I also see a pendulum below the red bits

The basic shape suggests Asian to me. It reminds me of some lacquer bowls from Southeast Asia, but it does not appear to be lacquer. How big is it? And can you get a better picture of the design inside?

There is glare on part of the central design, but I do get a Buddhist vibe.

I don't understand why this painted item is being referred to as "treen." All the wooden items I have seen being called treen have been unfinished wood. Is this a regional thing or something else?
