I recently acquired this piece - I have no idea of it's purpose or whether it's missing something - it looks like it a vase, but is open at the base so can't hold water. It has the signature of Jacob Petit, but no idea if it's genuine or a copy/fake - I can find nothing similar and would have imagined fakers would make something more common. Thanks in advance for any comments on it's purpose and/or if it's genuine or not.
Thanks Laura, yes it is the mark of Jacob Petit, and no doesn't have a lip. Perhaps something conical sat in it for flowers (like the what goes in an epergne)? It is a lovely piece and will display well, but I can't help thinking something is missing.
Oh my goodness! It's not a spooner, but when I googled Jacob Petit antique porcelain spooner I found exactly what it is and it is indeed missing most of it's parts! see attached. It's a pot pourri vase!
Oh my goodness that's serendipitous! My mother always says there is no such thing as coincidence, it's meant to happen. I throw out a goofy guess like spooner and voila you find it!
A pot pourri vase! That's really neat! Way back in the day, I know they had a lot of funk to cover up, but who would have suspected an antique Glade air freshener? Even with all the parts, I still wouldn't have known, LOL! Here's hoping you can find the rest of it. Did you go back to the scene of the crime? Sometimes things just get separated because (like me), the seller doesn't know they go together. I got a sensational Haviland pudding bowl with insert once because of that phenomenon. The seller remarked, "these go together?"
Too true! Yes I have asked, but haven't yet received a reply. Oh wow how awesome - hope I have the same luck! Thank you.
