What is the function of this Heisey Glass Bowl

I acquired this bowl several years ago and have puzzled ever since about how it would have been used. It also exhibits an interesting mix of glass making techniques.
It is 10.75" in diameter and the rim is 3" wide. The rim is very flat and shows very slight striations which you would expect in a hand blown (spun & tooled) piece. However the centre bowl is pressed glass, including the Heisey diamond in the middle and a couple of scratch-like flaws in the mold. The entire bottom of the centre bowl is ground flat and has a star pattern that appears to be hand cut (possibly to cover a pontil mark).
So what is it? How was it used and when was it made?

Pretty much. Or for fruit. It was a centerpiece bowl, back when people did fancy tables.
