It’s on the back of a Buddha head (guan yin?) but not sure what it’s called?

It is Hindu-Javanese, from Java, Indonesia.(faint again)

It is Hindu, btw, the head of a Hindu deity or king. Can be both on Java, since kings were deified.
You really need to have it checked, there are many fakes. But even if this is a fake, it is very beautiful.
The thing at the back is a Javanese hair clasp with a Garuda head, called 'Garuda Mungkur'. Garuda is a mythical eagle.

Thanks so much for the answer and being excited by it. That would certainly explain why my Buddhism rabbit hole wasn’t taking me to it. Specifically I was thinking Thai. Had it all wrong. I knew I recognized the face from somewhere and it’s probably from the very puppets you posted. I’ve seen a handful of those puppets. I was excited when I found it and I hoped it was real obviously. The photos looked convincing and the seller had some legit nice stuff. Now that I have it in hand I’m not sure. Something seems off about the patina although I can’t pinpoint it exactly. I have a couple of repro archaic Chinese vases with applied patina and it reminds me of those. The big thing though is the inside of the head is super clean. If it were real and from a broken statue I’d expect it to look like it had been around a long time in there. However it’s spotless. So going on that I was leaning towards in being a reproduction. I definitely hope I’m wrong! Thanks

 

So am I, but it is worth having it checked anyway.
One thing that puzzles me is the material. It looks like terracotta, which was used mostly in the East Javanese Majapahit Empire, 1293-ca 1500. The style, however, is Central Javanese, and older than Majapahit.
A similar style is found in the Prambanan temple complex on the Dieng Plateau near Jogyakarta, which was begun by the Sanjaya dynasty ca 850. The Dieng Plateau statues are carved from a grey stone.

My parents had a grey stone head in Prambanan style, also on a plinth, but that was much more clearly a replica.
I really love yours, replica or not, and would have bought it in a heartbeat.

Majapahit terracottas are fairly small, and the many fakes are usually recognised by their crisp carving. Yours is nothing like it, not in style, and not in the fake crisp carving.

Wow you’re pretty dang knowledgeable on this subject! I love absolutely anything with that much age. Having something truly old really excites me, no matter what it is. It’s weird I wouldn’t have probably bought this if I saw it on eBay but on a local marketplace site I had to have it before someone else took it. That’s a whole different story.

It is actually not stone or pottery at all though. I probably should have mentioned the material. It’s a copper alloy, probably leaning towards bronze but seems to be heavier on copper than most bronze. It’s totally hollow.

 

Beautiful piece and very nicely mounted. Also nicely photographed. I really like it. It reminds me slightly of the pre columbian heads I collect when I get them real cheap. Plenty of repros there too. I wonder how many are real vs fake? Guessing the majority are not real.

 

Ah, thanks for clarifying, that's a different story. In that case, if it is a replica, it is likely to be an antique replica, if that makes sense. Around 1900 nice metal replicas were made in the old Hindu-Javanese style.
Still, best to find someone to take a look, preferably in person.

Just bumped into this randomly. It is Garuda as well, right? Guessing not a whole ton of age.

 

I believe this one is Hanuman, the Monkey King. I have one somewhat similar, carved as a keris holder. Yours does not appear to have a suitable opening through the hand to hold a keris. Not old.

 

Ah that makes sense. Does look monkey like now that you mention it. This one I just found for sale, didn’t buy it. Yours holds an actual keris or a scaled down version?

So have I, both the regular size and a miniature, to hold a 'keris dukun' or small healing keris.

 

I think he would hold a regular keris (I don't have one). I would post a photo of him, but he has had some run-ins with the cats over the years, and a few parts are no longer attached.

 

I just took a photo of my full size Hanuman, apologies for the poor quality. But you get an idea what a Hanuman keris holder looks like. Normally he is standing on the floor.

Dang ol cats. My friend just got a couple kittens. Visiting them made me miss having a cat and I started thinking about maybe adopting one. Then I realized how much stuff would get destroyed the way I have it out. I leave way to much expensive stuff piled on every surface and dangling on every edge. I nearly destroy things (and sometimes do) anytime I have to move something big or dig anything out.
