Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

There is writing in pencil on the back, and pen in front. I suspect the pencil writing came first, and the person who wrote in pen on the front was copying what it says on the back.

Can anybody decipher this? The pen writing clearly says Oalhom Douders. It also looks like that on the back, but could be something else. Of course, the name doesn't come up anywhere.

This was taken by a studio called Mecca in Seattle, Washington. It's an early 20th century photo, probably 1910-1930 some time.

Here is the writing on the back:

I darkened and enhanced contrast a bit on the pencil writing.

My searches reveal nothing. Maybe Bakers has an idea...

What a strange name! Looks like she's portraying a Pilgrim - except for the crucifix and the flowers? on her bonnet. ;) Maybe Dutch?

I assume you've already searched the usual sources...

I actually haven't done much yet... although have had the photo a while. I have so many mystery photos that I don't get to all of them. I did think Douders seemed Dutch, if that is what it is.

Not a very accurate costume, for sure! I was thinking Pilgrim also.

:hilarious: I tried Google - which wanting me to search Oklahoma Spiders! AND when I waved that off, the only hit was to this thread (already!)

I tried Ancestry too - several different spelling interpretations of what's written. Lots of Douders and Dowders, but no Oalhom (or even close.)

I think we are looking at Hester Prynne. No clue who the actress is. :(

    Nice photo, Fig.

The first name looks to me like maybe it starts with a "C"... maybe Calkom? The second might be Dowlers, Dowders, or Domlers? Searching for these names didn't help, though.

I thought of her, but don't see the Scarlet Letter. Unless it's covered by her hand, or this is pre-letter.

The first name on the back could be "Catherine" but the only silent era actress I could find that came close was Catherine Doucet. That said, my first reaction before seeing the writing was Lillian Gish - she has the jawline Gish had. Cheers

Starting with C makes a lot more sense.

Thanks, all -- She could also be a theatrical actress, not necessarily films. But something about her makeup is similar to that of silent films. Hard to say, though.
