WHAT is this? A Surreal Elephant Door Knocker?

    Found this yesterday at a thrift store. I thought it was a door knocker, but the knocker is very small to the rest of it + it has some unusual hole on the back lower center - anyone know what this is/was?

    I can sort of see an elephant...or maybe a flying monkey. But I'd agree, it is apparently part of a firescreen. Not sure what would be the purpose of that little tab in his mouth.

    The 'trunk' in the center & then I thought the spirals on each side were the eyes?
