If anyone can help with the type of wood and what this is it is appreciated. 6 inches in height and a width of about 8 inches. With a quarter inch hole in it. Had suggestion of a yew burl. 2AF8A512-0DE3-40C3-95AC-C5BE332ED72F.jpeg AB10F630-4E40-4404-B9AE-FA16B61F8F72.jpeg A71D245C-0BB1-433B-B27C-C5DB06708A5F.jpeg C343E7DB-B1CF-421E-80B5-D5B36E7D5752.jpeg AC68C142-E3D0-40F3-9D79-933F3A7448C3.jpeg 7E97AD19-B81C-47A0-974D-6B607F20811F.jpeg D79AA064-5F47-48AB-A48A-783EB3D137B9.jpeg 3B2E51A2-753A-42C7-AA4B-B3869E37D8A8.jpeg

If you were in sunny California I’d say it was manzanita.

I don't know, but my guess would be western red cedar.

Not Western Red Cedar. If it is yew, the sapwood is creamy yellow and the heartwood brick red.

Oh boy! ...the sapwood is the outer layer (nearer the surface, under the bark layer) and the heartwood is in the centre.

Hard to say from the pics what it is and although it would be nice to know for sure, without handling it it's almost impossible to say.

Some closer pics of grain and spots underneath where varnish isn’t C3A2C0A7-671C-4B98-8922-A642572F1D40.jpeg 5B182396-F4F4-494C-AEC2-1D75B0B7AE68.jpeg E02CF1F6-24E3-4F06-95FE-C5DAD89896B5.jpeg

I also think some type of evergreen. It appears to have had epoxy applied to the outside. Often epoxy is applied to wood as it dries to keep it from cracking. Also a thru hole helps it to dry from the inside to the outside. Definitely a person who loved & wanted to preserve the burl!
