    Hello,

Purchased this today, and I don't know what it is.

    Literally no clue.

The seller said it was a Victorian Feminist Card, which makes absolutely no sense to me.

But I thought it was interesting none the less.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance! IMG_9571.JPG IMG_9575.JPG IMG_9577.JPG IMG_9578.JPG

I'd really like to know how old it is for sure. What makes me curious is that this card is supposed to be humorous, and although this isn't my area at all, I just don't know of other examples with a similar theme.. What would it be used for, a coaster? Are there physically similar examples that are known to be from the Victorian period?

Something about it is saying "modern" to me but I sure can't pin it down.

What the heck do they mean by that?
Was that word even in use then..really? :wideyed:
I think it's simply a little girl thinking she wants to be older to do what the older girls may be doing. Clothes, etc.
She may also be stating, with how she's treating her doll, almost certainly the only one she's ever had, that she is in transition so doesn't care about it and that she's being dragged and held back just like the doll. :(

Is that a Freudian slip I see under her skirt? ;):rolleyes:

I was thinking she was pondering being an adult, knocked doll chair, and like you said, doll dragging behind.

About the size of a cabinet card photo.

It's a Victorian one-sided greeting card. I think it's just supposed to mean what King said, that the little girl is wishing she were grown up. :)

The brown lines look like either a child doodled on it or somehow something rolled over the image.

If the shaded areas have small, irregular dots, it's a chromolithograph print. My guess is it isn't a chromo, though.

Thank you so much! No dots, so not a chromo.

Whatever it is meant to be, it is not one of the best examples thereof. "Wish" takes the subjunctive, as in "I wish I were..."

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I would also put "that" before "were" -- maybe just me. :)

To add a bit about how the artwork was done... it looks like the black area may have been what's called "scratchboard," where paper is coated with a black substance and a tool is used to scratch away the coating in areas.

If the printing wasn't chromolithography, I'm not sure what process was used.

Does this have a little thickness to it? Could you stick pins in the edge? I've seen pincushion cards here and there and this looks like one. That would kinda go with the picture.

I do think it's just my eyes playing tricks with that first photo though. Still, had to ask.
