What is this? Metal Art? Printing press Art?

    It seems that this is metal over wood (I think but I'm not sure) framed in metal. There is a # barely visible carved into the back but I can't make it out. No signature or writing. The marks on the front don't want to come off and I think it is something corrosive. It's very heavy, and, IMO, pretty cool! Each cross has a halo type outline where it was likely pressed down but the lines are so clean... I just don't know.

    Any ideas?

    Looks like cast aluminum. I think there may have been a tag on the back at one time, looks like a spot on the wood where there was one.

    The number 24 could have significance.

    In the Netherlands we have 'The Song of the Eighteen Dead', a 1941 poem about Dutch Resistance fighters waiting to be executed by the Nazis. It was published illegally and became a symbol of the Resistance.
    A different number, but that is what this reminded me of.
