What is this object?

    Seen in an auction lot (there were two of them). I recall thinking that the slim thing on the chain looked a bit like a propelling pencil. About 7 inches long from memory.

    Any ideas welcomed

    It's a (Chinese?) water pipe. Often referred to as opium pipes though just as likely used for tobacco.

    Thanks Skeezix, I would have had fun trying to insert pencil lead!
