I found this yesterday while going through storage boxes at my mother-in-law's home. It is silverplate.
Nobody knows for sure who the recipient was because the name is missing ,but the small emblem says it was awarded by the Norfolk Virginia Amateur Trapshooting Association in 1923.
The glass inset has a hole in it, so perhaps a piece is missing?
    It measures 7.5"x6" (19x15 cm).
I'm sure one of our amazing Antiquers must know what this is used for!

Just a guess, possibly used as a butter dish with butter pats or balls placed on ice chips, and the hole would be for drainage as the ice melted.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

To ME, it just looks like a small presentation plate/dish award.....glass insert NOT really sure about! Could hold a candle, but for what purpose????? Sandra's idea sounds plausible!

A butter dish would probably be given out to a trapshooting participant as a consolation prize, lol.

Incidentally, 1923 was the first year for the ATA.

Then why would the engraving say this was for the 24th Virginia State Tournament?

The tournament and the ATA are mutually exclusive entities. Assuming the ATA may have sanctioned the event that year.

Looking at the history of the organization it looks like they had other names prior to Amateur.

    https://shootata.com/GeneralInformation/TrapshootingTimeline.aspx
    • 1890- Interstate Trapshooting Association was formed.
    • 1900- First Grand American held at Interstate Park in Queens, New York.
    • 1909 - First automatic trap machines were used.
    • 1911- Doubles was introduced for the first time.
    • 1913- First Women's Trapshooting Club (Dupont Gun Club in Wilmington, DE)
    • 1919- Name was changed from Interstate Association to the American Trapshooting Association.
    • 1923 - American Trapshooting Association later became Amateur Trapshooting Association.

I have this item as well, and it is a presentation tray, so I don't have a question about it's use.
The other item with the glass inset is baffling, though.
Perhaps if I could find the roster for the competition, I would know who the relative was that received this.
Or maybe the relative was on the committee, and these items were unused prizes?

I'd guess it's an ashtray. The glass insert could be removed for cleaning. The hole in the center could be an extinguisher for cigarettes.

    Thanks for your response!
'Ashtray' was my first impression. However, there are no rests for the cigar/cigarette. Without that , it cant be an ashtray, right?
    What a mystery.
