Perhaps I'm googling the wrong search terms, but I can't come up with the name for this type of work. It's thin layers of metal that are engraved through to expose a different color underneath. I'm sure there's a proper name for this type of work, but I can't find it. Many thanks for any help you can provide!

    Nice mirror, sassafras.
I can't see the detail very well, is it metal on metal, or is there enamel as well?
Do you mean cloisonné enamel, maybe?

Thank you! It's metal on metal. There are lots of thin layers that are engraved at varying depths to give the different colors.

Could you give us a couple of close ups so that we could see more clearly?

Sure! I'll take some more pics when I go back to the house (hopefully this afternoon). This is another piece from the estate of a family member that my FIL is the executor for. I'm doing a whole house inventory for him and trying to be very thorough, so it's easy when the time comes to liquidate the contents.

Looks to me like Damascene work, the precious metals are inlaid into a darkened steel base, probably Spanish from Toledo...

Can you show the back too?

Very nice Damascene work. I'd think Spanish, given those motifs and the frame shaping. Close ups needed, as Cheryl says.

Got a couple of close up shots this evening. The back is just covered with a black backing. Not much to see there. The red thing in the second picture is the reflection of my camera. ***Note to self....do not buy another red camera.***

That's quite a frame! Sure there's no maker's mark? Could be very small.

Looked all over and couldn't find one. If there's one there, my guess is it's under the backing.

Check the frame with a magnet to see if it's magnetic.A very close up of the circle bottom center and either right or left bottom corner would help.

A great many of these only had paper or metallic foil labels back in the day.
