This silver plated piece by good maker Mappin & Webb was in a mixed auction lot today. It has four candle holders and a bowl with pierced lid in the centre. I assume it’s some sort of table centrepiece. Is it for potpourri?

Yes that looks like it's perhaps meant for roses.

Agree, flowers. Obviously not meant for serving as one would have to reach over lit candles to access it. Potpourri is typically not used for dining table decoration because of its heady scent which could overpower the taste of food.

A cluster of short cut roses would be beautiful in there with lit taper candles!

say_it_slowly The worst prison is a closed heart

Those holes are very odd shapes for sticking flowers in aren't they? Hard to imagine it was for food as who would want to reach through burning candles for a snack. Seems like it must have been flowers or potpourri
