I bought a square quarter sawn paw/lion foot dining table yesterday. It has no chairs with it.

I haven't picked it up yet so this is the only picture i currently have. It's a little more warm in color than what's depicted in the picture.

Is this English or American and can anyone put a date on it?

What kind of chairs would have gone with this? 20160408_121358.jpg

Seagoat, I am just curious but . . . what is the height of the top of the table?

I havent taken measurements aside from width, which is 48"

Im 5'2 and it comes maybe up to my upper thigh, lol
    That probably doesnt help

As to what kind of table.

I'd say English oak, probably early 1900s to 20s.
But wait for Brad to confirm.
I'll see if I can find a picture of the chairs that would have gone with the table.

Example of a set that is probably a little later than yours. 3 chairs match table, 3 don't.

Two chairs in the front - the legs match the leg turning on the table. Chair backs pick up design of table skirt. Very sturdy, utilitarian.
The other chairs blend, but don't match.

I think those chairs are a little late and scaled a bit small. I do like the carved bulbous detailing on those chairs as a similar match. Here is something closer to what I have in mind but also not exact .....

Not exactly right for your table but certainly from about the same time period..... Have to show this set that has remarkably stayed together all these years. The mass of these chairs is correct if not the styling.

Hm. Im thinking finding a set like these is going to be some work.

Maybe I should just have a couple benches made with quarter sawn oak?

What about a t-back with a paw foot? Not quite right but closer than benches would be and should be able to be found.

Some people might like these better since they are not as massive. Not sure most would know or care what was original anyway. I know my family had a set like your table with massive chairs inherited from my grandparents. My mom couldn't wait to get rid of them and get something smaller.

That table looks like it ought to purr when you stroke it. (LOL) I like it. Put whatever chairs fit with it, since that's what the Victorians would have done anyway.

    So you think its Victorian?

Looks like; it's not a style they copied much later as far as I know. Brad would be the one to ask. I know enough to get into trouble when it comes to furniture.

Sea goat......I'd grab a chair from somewhere there, pull it up to it and sit on it (the chair).....make sure you're not getting yourself a "knee-nocker"......table that's miserable to sit at!!!:shy::shy::shy: Unless you've already done that!!!!

May have had casters originally that would have raised it up a couple inches.
