What kind of damage is this? (antique gold ring)

I bought this lovely signet ring for my birthday. Unfortunately, the seller declined to mention that the ring is badly damaged... It appears to have been cast in two parts, and the 'seam' is exposed on either side, most noticeably on one of the bottom back edges. Do you think this is something that can be repaired affordably?

    I suspect it's been resized.

So you mean that layer around the inner band might have been added on to make the ring smaller? I thought it might be hollow (maybe resin filled), and that it's crumpling inward now...
I've never seen any damage like this before. It baffles me.

That is what it looks like to me, a thin layer of gold and resin filled. You didn't mention the age, maybe early to mid-19th century?
I am not a jeweller, but I would think repairing the band would be difficult, given the resin centre.

I would take it to a trusted jeweler for a hands-on inspection, they should be able to tell you more about it.

I was thinking the seam indicated a resize.

What does the seller say? That’s unacceptable to omit to show damage like that!.

The ring was hollow to start with.Who ever sized the ring didn't know what they were doing.

I'm not sure how old it is. I assumed Georgian to Victorian as well. It has a heraldic crest on it, and I collect antique heraldic seals, so I am really disappointed. It was $300 and is probably 14k, but with this damage, I just don't think it's worth it.... I'd be worried it would break if I wore it.
I plan to do that before I decide to return it.
She said she didn't notice, and that I can return it (presumably on my own dime).
    Thanks!

Overhere it would be considered hidden damage, and the seller would have to pay return shipping. I don't know how legislation is in the US, but it is worth trying to get her to pay.
