    I was going to say pit saw cutting... But Iv'e never seen them in two directions like that... Usually close parallel lines

    Band saws and circular saws have been used for naybe a couple of hundred years, as have reciprocating mechanical saws, once the steam engine came in, habd sawing vanished except in the most backward areas.
