Whatzit handspike. Or apprentice machinist exam or...

Object on right is 19" long, largest cross-section is 5/8 x 5/8", top is circular 7/16" dia. It is solid steel. The shape is identical to 5' long oak handspike used to maneuver heavy guns during the War of Northern Aggression. What is this small steel copy?

 

Pry bar......?......for just a little prying..?

Looks like something that would be used on a wood lathe.

 

I thought of that but could not find anything cut the same way.
Still, it could have once had a handle....

 

You might be interested in what the boys on another forum came up with, I think the one about a gear-turning thingy sounds pretty good. Only things you miss by not being a member there are the photos, I think.

I think it might be a crate opener from the retail world. In years gone by most things were shipped in wooden boxes and crates and nailed shut.

 

Good idea but at that width it would just splinter everything. Needs to be wide like a 'Wonderbar'.
