White vase with gold paint

Discussion in 'Pottery, Glass, and Porcelain' started by Johan Derkesen, May 17, 2016.

  1. And another one: white vase with gold paint with 28 at the bottom. No other marks that I could find. Thank you all for helping out.

Two thoughts (and believe me these are just thoughts - I am not normally a china person.)

There appear to be impressed numbers or letters under the glaze on the bottom, partially obscured. A better look at them might help someone help you.

Second, can you tell us more about what looks like a shiny metal "rod," also on the bottom. Does it also appear inside the vase? Seems out of place, unless this was part of a larger item.

I think what you are seeing on the bottom is just a hole. The light is reflecting inside the vase and gives the illusion of being a shiny rod

Well, I guess it might be, desperate. But I just looked again (enlarged) and it sure looks like metal to me even now. Could be a case of "once you see it one way, you can't see it another." ;)

Would be nice if Johan responded about it (but I know he's halfway around the world and is probably sleeping.)

  9. Better late than never (couldn't respond earlier due to circumstances I will not elaborate on any further):
yes it's a hole at the bottom and I doubt if it's handpainted, considering the family where it came from were no artists or craftspeople....

Does the hole mean it was a lamp? P.S. The family not being artistic doesn't mean it wasn't gifted to them at some point.

I have a few of this shape, but unpainted. Or, at least, there's very little paint left one one of them. I've also seen many in the UK. I don't think they're British, but have never pinned them down. My theory is German or Austrian fairings, pre WW1.

I think this is early 1900s German, possibly Austria.
Maybe souvenir pieces or inexpensive trinkets from the time period.
    No great value.
