It measures 52.6 mm tall 32.9 mm wide. Partial lead back, maybe where an attachment once was. Do you think it is a cast cape pin?
Ah so maybe then it could be Lee. I see a beard but maybe that's just me. (or maybe George, he is from VA)
Yesterday wasn't my day for item identification... for multiple reasons, including this one. I did not notice the beard. Does anybody have a depiction or a photo of Jefferson Davis to compare?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_E._Lee#/media/File:Robert_Edward_Lee.jpg The beard is all wrong for Davis.
I have spent a good bit of time picking the crud off of this bust, and although I couldn't seem to get it all, I think the cleaned up version provides more detail.
I'm thinking George. There was a huge cult of personality around him, even when he was alive. He could have easily taken advantage of it, like an early-day Stalin, but in his wisdom and maturity he chose not to.
All cleaned up, he reminds me of William Shakespeare. (I wasn't going to comment again, but maybe third time's the charm?)
My thought was Shakey ...just seen Deborah's comment xx As soon as I saw the cleaned up version, Will S came to my mind. Looks like what we perceive him to look like ( as no one knows if he even existed, I've questioned it since I read a book called The Shakespear (e) Conspiracy)
Could be a lot of bearded men I guess. Beards surely hide one's face. And as mentioned, the actual busts, medallions, paintings etc of people sometimes hardly look like them anyway.
I first thought Washington too, but the second pic leaves no doubt about the beard and the totally wrong collar. I think it's the Bard.
