Who was Blanche Sitwell?

This letter has had 2-3 hours of our research time yet the identity of the sender is proving remarkably elusive.

The addressee is probably Janet Achurch (married to Charles Carrington) whose correspondence includes receipt of a letter from Blanche Sitwell.

Blanche also appears to have been in correspondence with Randall Davidson, her correspondence address was 39 Egerton Crescent, just about the swankiest street in London.

Is she Susan Rose Blanche Marion Sitwell, unmarried sister of Edith Sitwell's paternal grandmother, Lady Sitwell?

Can anyone cut through my fog of confusion please!

I haven't sorted out the relationships, but... This listing from Debrett's Peerage from 1902 lists Blanche Rose Susan Marion Sitwell, and says her residence was at 39, Egerton Crescent, S.W. Perhaps the same one?

I have just seen that Edith Sitwell is also listed on that page and that Blanche was her great-aunt. However, it appears to me that Blanche was the sister of Edith's grandfather Sir Sitwell Reresby Sitwell, not of Lady Sitwell, who gained the name "Sitwell" through marriage.

I hope that the above link works for you.

Link not working right for me :(

But you've got a confirmed link with 39 Egerton Crescent. Unfortunately I cant find Sir Sitwell Reresby Sitwell's family relationships, not helped by the Sitwells seemingly interchanging christian names between generations!

So is Susan Rose Blanche Marion Sitwell the same as Blanche Rose Susan Marion Sitwell?

I expect it is probably our Blanche but such a confusing genealogy without a clear family tree.

I was afraid that the link wouldn't work for you since you are in a different country from the U.S. -- Debrett's Peerage is an authority on family relationships of the British peerage, and the page I linked does tell the family relationships.

Google Books does allow clipping pieces of the pages. I will see whether I can figure out how to post a snip of it here. Unfortunately it seems to be in HTML format, which doesn't post directly into this rich text box. I will try it another way by using some of the tools....

Eureka! I hope you can read this; it appears small on my screen.

The entry is for the 4th Baronet, and tells his relationships with others. His father, Sitwell Reresby Sitwell was the 3rd Baronet, and the Lady Sitwell you mentioned earlier is the "Widow living of 3rd Baronet" mentioned at the bottom.

Edith Sitwell is the "Daughter living" (Daughter of the 4th baronet).

The "Aunts living" (Daughters of the 2nd baronet) include Blanche Rose Susan Marion Sitwell. Since her names are written in that order in this source, that order is probably correct. Although nobody is perfect and I don't know your source for her names in the order in which you listed them.

The "Aunts living" are aunts of the 4th baronet, and Blanche is one of them. That makes her the sister of the 3rd baronet, who was the grandfather of Edith Sitwell.

Thank you, rhiwfield! I'm just happy to have finally figured how to insert the clip. And by the way, Google Books comes up with two links in the snipping tool. I used the "mountain" icon in this editing box and copied and pasted the link called "Image" not the one called "Embed."
