a little research indicates that this LOCKING egg cabinet is probably Edwardian (1900-1910) although I can't confirm that - it has small signs of worm activity - and an old skeleton key lock - but why ? why would they have had a need to lock up the eggs ? historically it comes before WWI - the depression - prohibition - when things mayhave been more precious - why lock up eggs ? Food is locked up to prevent servants from stealing.

From Wikipedia: "The chatelaine was also used as a woman's keychain in the 19th century to show the status of women in a wealthy household. The woman with the keys to all the many desks, chest of drawers, food hampers, pantries, storage containers, and many other locked cabinets was 'the woman of the household'. As such, she was the one who would direct the servants, housemaids, cooks and delivery servicemen and would open or lock the access to the valuables of the house, possessing total authority over who had access to what."

Maybe it's Russian and they were trying to protect the Faberge Eggs?

Or in a bar and they were locking up the hard-boiled eggs so that drinkers couldn't eat more than the one or two they paid for.

I find it interesting that so many of them have windows in the front, instead of just wooden slats...but they still wanted to lock them up??

    What for??

"IN CASE OF OMELETTE - BREAK GLASS" ?

Buzz... not Buzz. He'd just chew through the case first and then eat the eggs.

You know like these people who poach eggs (not in the cooking sense) of rare bird species.
