Wooden Lion Figurine

Any idea where from?

 

Shot in the dark from me would be Ethiopia. I have this vague notion of Lion of Judea symbolism.

 

I can’t find a match yet. Could it be European?

 

If we’re guessing, I’ll guess India and not older than mid 20th century due to paint motifs and overall low quality workmanship. (Not to suggest at all that very high quality work doesn’t come from India as well).

 

I asked on different places and there are all kind of suggestions but whatever it is and mass produced there should be a matching example somewhere.
